That’s the rumor (unconfirmed but good source) from Kennett. Happened Wednesday at undisclosed location. I could find nary a word on the net. Could it be you heard it here first?

Sheryl Crow Aquatic Center
Kennett, Missouri hasn’t had a public swimming pool since they demolished the ancient, aboveground monster that people my age grew up with. But thanks to the generosity of hometown-girl-turned-superstar Sheryl Crow (and others), they now have the Sheryl Crow Aquatic Center. The nine-time Grammy winner came to take part in the dedication ceremonies on Saturday and Barb and I were there for the big splash.
I don’t know Sheryl Crow (I don’t know any big stars) but she seems like one very classy, very smart, very down-to-earth lady. She still sees herself as a Kennett girl. That’s home. And she’s concerned that the little town has fallen upon hard times, economically. So she wrote ’em a check for a million bucks to build a municipal swimming pool just off the downtown “square.” Which is slowly dying. Some would say dead.
But Ms. Crow is giving more than her money to help revitalize the town. She’s giving her time and her name and a little of her wonderful talent. She performed a few songs with a local band, The Usual Suspects. Her daddy, Wendell, plays guitar in the band when he’s not lawyer’ing.
I’m terrible at estimating crowds because I avoid them like the plague, but I’d guess there were three or four hundred [The DDD reports 4,000] folks on hand and it was a beautiful morning. I got to see a lot of old friends, many of whom I had not seen in 20 years. I took a bunch of photos while Barb manned the camcorder. We’ll get some video posted as soon as I have time to edit.
Following the performance, Sheryl held a little pool-side news conference [5 min] for the half dozen TV and radio stations on hand.

(Rumor: A crew from ABC’s 20/20 was following Sheryl around for some upcoming segment) When no one could come up with a coherent question, Sheryl took over and explained why she got involved in the project. Not sure if you’ll be able to hear it, but I thought the best question came from Barb, who wanted to know Sheryl’s best stroke when she was on the high school swim team (breast stroke).
I don’t know that a new swimming pool will save my old home town but I’m proud of all those folks for trying.
Special thanks to Kennett correspondent Charles Jolliff for link to photos of Kennett’s old municipal pool. UPI Super Photog Bill Greenblatt for the photo above and others. And Jan McElwrath and Randy Morgan with the Kennett Chamber of Commerce for organizing a great a event making us feel so welcome.
Sheryl and Lance tour Northeast Arkansas
We have been able to confirm Sheryl Crow and Lance Armstrong were in Kennett, Missouri for Thanksgiving and while I can’t confirm the Wal-Mart siting, we’re told SC and LA lunched at Bill’s Bar-B-Que. Lance also found time for a little bike tour of northeast Arkansas (Kennett to Rector to Piggott to Kennett).
Everyone goes to Wal-Mart
My friend John reports Sheyrl Crow and Lance Armstrong were sited in the Kennett, Missouri, Wal-Mart yesterday (Wednesday). Those two could be anywhere on the planet for the holiday. I love that Ms. Crow goes back to our little town and that Mr. Armstrong goes with her.
Stalking Sheryl Crow
On Monday Sheryl Crow gave testimony in a case against Ambrose Kappos, 38, a one-time Navy diver charged with stalking the singer during a 16-month period. At one point in Kappos’ nearly two-hour testimony, Assistant District Attorney Christopher Hill asked him if he is a “fan” of the singer. “I don’t think that’s a very good term,” Kappos replied. “Maybe … spiritual twin. … Maybe I’m crazy and delusional. Maybe they need to lock me up.” Uh, yeah. Maybe.
Crow for Harkin
Iowa Senator Tom Harkin’s annual steak fry featured Sheryl Crow and comedian Tom Arnold. Crow performed for over half an hour, playing hits like “A Change Will Do You Good.” Between songs, Crow told the crowd she “feels like four more years of Bush is dangerous.” [Audio of performance 47 min]
Sheryl Crow to speak at Chamber event
From the Kennett Chamber of Commerce website: “Nine-time Grammy award winner Sheryl Crow will return home to serve as the keynote speaker at the 58th Annual Kennett Chamber of Commerce Banquet. The banquet will be at 6:30 p.m. Monday, April 12th, at the American Legion Building in Kennett. Tickets for the event are $25 per person for Chamber members and $35 per person for non-Chamber members. Tickets can be purchased by calling the Chamber office at 573-888-5828. The deadline to purchase tickets is March 15th. The meal will be prepared by Simply Delicious Catering Service.” Can that possibly be a coincidence?
Christmas in Kennett
We’re blogging this Christmas Eve from Terry and Nancy’s home in Kennett. Everyone but Ripley and I are packed in at the First Presbyterian Church for the annual choral extravaganza.
A few minutes ago I had some delicious chicken salad that Nancy made. She said it was quite likely that Lance Armstrong enjoyed some of this very same chicken salad earlier today. He and Sheryl Crow were in for an early Christmas and Nancy sent over some sandwiches. We are but two ships, knoshing in the night.
Tour de Kennett
“The new man in Sheryl Crow’s life is Tour de France champ Lance Armstrong, 32. The pair have been quietly seeing each other for the past few weeks, and sources say the rocker, 41, is smitten.”
I’d been hearing/reading that for a few weeks but didn’t think much about until getting some on-the-ground confirmation this week in Kennett. My sources tell me Lance spent Thanksgiving with Sheryl and her family in Kennett. Okay, that’s surreal enough. But the five time Tour de France winner is reported to have gone cycling while in town. Don’t know the full route but he apparently biked down HW 25 to Senath. I just don’t have the words to express how bizarre that strikes me.
The best agent in show business
There was a final show for Johnny Cash. Sheryl Crow and Emmylou Harris sang, Kris Kristofferson cried, and a lot of people wore black as 1,000-plus gathered Monday at funeral services for Cash, the original Man in Black who died Friday of complications of diabetes. [E! Online]
