Sheryl Crow rocks Redneck Riviera

Our man in Pensecolda, Matt Zeni, files this review of Sheryl Crows performance at the civic center last Saturday night:

Sherylpensecola“She talked about traveling to Panama City with her family many years ago and going to Mrs. Reed’s trailer park where they rented a space for a week or two with their “cool” Airstream trailer. She and the band traveled to Panama City Saturday and saw a lot of changes with many, many condos but Mrs. Reed and her trailer park are still there. She also mentioned that she ‘hangs out’ down the road in Destin.

She looks terrific for being 46 years young and all she had been through the past three years and she touched on the events in her life the past few years. She was incredible [photos]. First time I saw her in concert. I had the chance to talk with her about 5-10 minutes when she was (in Columbia, MO) about ten years ago. She was in town for a concert and for MU homecoming and she was at the station(s) with her parents.

She was amazing. I even called a friend back in Columbia while in the civic center before the show. She asked me to call her back when Sheryl played her favorite song, My Favorite Mistake. I did and Tracey enjoyed the 6-7 minutes thanks to T-Mobile. Nothing like a live concert on your cellphone! I saw quite a few cellphone and I-phones sending video and audio to all parts of the world.”

Thanks for the report, Matt. Makes a boy wonder how concert promoters will stop thousands of fans from streaming live video from concerts like this. Or if they should try.

LA Times reviews Sheryl Crow’s ‘Detours’

"Sheryl Crow has proven her mettle so many times that her unique position is now taken for granted. She may be the most successful woman rocker ever, with the most consistently auspicious career. But she’s still often dismissed as merely competent."

"Crow’s progressive lyrics hit like rubber-band pings fired by some joker in the back row at school. No one is likely to sing her verses at a march on Washington. But by addressing serious issues in the language of pop, they remind us that political speech and casual breeze-shooting can and do often intersect." [Full review]

$300K grant for “Dream City” Kennett

According to the news release that just hit my in-box, Missouri Governor Matt Blunt has selected my home town as one of his DREAM (Downtown Revitalization and Economic Enhancement for Missouri) which comes with a $300,000 grant to make structural improvements to its downtown area. The money will be used for things like awning and façade improvements to buildings in downtown Kennett to make them more attractive to potential employers and job creators.

When I was growing up in Kennett, the downtown area was thriving. When the big discounters came to down, “downtown” dried up and the last time I was home it was a pretty sad sight. I don’t know if new awnings will turn the tide. In memory of brighter days for Kennett… and hopes for brighter days to come, “Kennett, My Home Town.” [Photo by Charles Jolliff]

Music videos, guerrilla style

“As far as I know, MTV and VH1 don’t play music videos anymore; it’s all reality TV and game shows, so I don’t know if they’ll really pick up a video. To me, it’s an interesting time because you used to make a video for a million dollars with a great director. Now, you spend $10,000, if that, with no hair and makeup, and do it completely guerrilla style. For example, we did a song called “God Bless This Mess” about the war and we shot it in front of the White House and nobody stopped us. It’s really really exciting to just go out and shoot, like how Bob Dylan shot “Don’t Look Back” — it’s just a guy with a camera and you’re performing the song.”

And she can sing

Sheryl CrowI always get a few “you filthy perv” emails when I post one of these photos of Kennett’s Favorite Daughter, Sheryl Crow. I promise, I’m motivated by nothing more than small-town-pride. And appreciation for the work it must take to keep a 45-year-old body looking this fine. (I’m getting close to perv, aren’t I?)

What can I say? Smart, talented women in control of their lives is a turn-on for me. Okay, it doesn’t hurt if they’re hot.

Sheryl Crow and The Usual Suspects

On her way back from Destin last weekend, Barb stopped off in Memphis to hook up with some Kennett pals and catch The Usual Suspects at B. B. King’s on historic  Beale Street.  [Photos] The Usual Suspects is a pick-up band made up of some good old Kennett boys: Wendell Crow (Sheryl’s daddy), Jim Baker, Gary Wilcoxson, Darryl Wilcoxson, Doug Carter and Ken Williams. Barb shot a little video on her Casio (she didn’t have a real good angle).

Rove to Sheryl Crow: “Don’t touch me.”

Sheryl Crow goes one-on-one (well, two-on-one) with Carl Rove. It happened last night at the White House Correspondents Dinner:

Rover, Crow and David“In his attempt to dismiss us, Mr. Rove turned to head toward his table, but as soon as he did so, Sheryl reached out to touch his arm. Karl swung around and spat, “Don’t touch me.” How hardened and removed from reality must a person be to refuse to be touched by Sheryl Crow? Unfazed, Sheryl abruptly responded, “You can’t speak to us like that, you work for us.” Karl then quipped, “I don’t work for you, I work for the American people.” To which Sheryl promptly reminded him, “We are the American people.”

Like Steve McQueen, All I need’s a fast machine

Sheryl's ShirtI posted a short video clip last month of some of Sheryl Crow’s clothing and costumes which she donates to raise money for a childrens home in Kennett, Missouri.

What I did’nt mention (for fear of ruining the surprise) was the item I discovered hanging on a rack in a back room: a slinky top (T-shirt?) Ms. Crow wore in the Steve McQueen video. I thought that would be a cool gift for my pen-pal and Sheryl Crow uberfan, Ann.

I liberated the shirt with a donation and sent it off to Ann, who lives in Belgium. After a month held hostage in Belgian customs (the shirt, not Ann), Ann has the shirt and promises a photo.

Sheryl Crow tops unlucky at love list

Rocker SHERYL CROW has topped a new Unlucky in Love list following a string of failed romances. The SOAK UP THE SUN singer, who has had flings with ERIC CLAPTON, KID ROCK and OWEN WILSON, broke off her engagement to cycling champion LANCE ARMSTRONG last year (06).

But she hasn’t given up on finding true love, confessing, “I don’t want to spend the rest of my life alone. That’s the only true fear I have.” Her optimism hasn’t kept her off the top of In Touch Weekly magazine’s new love losers list, in which she narrowly beat best pal JENNIFER ANISTON. The top 10 is:

1. SHERYL CROW
2. JENNIFER ANISTON
3. PAULA ABDUL
4. HILARY DUFF
5. TYRA BANKS
6. LAUREN CONRAD (US reality TV star)
7. MARIAH CAREY
8. CARRIE UNDERWOOD (AMERICAN IDOL winner)
9. KIRSTIE ALLEY
10. CAMERON DIAZ

Well, that kinda sucks. I might argue that splitting with Lance could go in the “Lucky” column. But I no doubt our girl will find true romance and lasting happiness.
