“Some of his most hardcore associates and advisers, who egged Trump on and helped fuel his most dangerous or destructive attempts to subvert American democracy, aren’t doing so well. In the three months since the election was called for Joe Biden, most of the lawyers and MAGA enthusiasts who decided to play a consequential role in the ex-president’s efforts to overturn the Democratic nominee’s 2020 win (efforts that led directly to the Jan. 6 mob violence), have had their jobs or businesses shredded, their personal lives shaken, or their reputations irrevocably tarnished—all while Trump’s been relaxing and playing his rounds of golf in the Sunshine State.”

One More Day
Protecting our nation’s capital
Yes, it’s sad to see our nation’s capital turned into an armed camp. Sad that it’s necessary. And it might be necessary for a long time. And it will be expensive. But I’m okay with that. The United States has occupied Afghanistan for 20 years, and we’ve been in Iraq since 2003. Those two “wars” have cost taxpayers more than $2.4 trillion dollars.
But we had to do it, right? That’s where the bad guys are. We gotta stop ’em before they get to America. Turns out, they’re already here and have been for a long time. Right wing white supremacists managed to do what ISIS and Al-Qaeda never could. Storm and take the U.S. Capital. The enemy is “inside the wire” to use the military expression. And they’re within the ranks of our police departments and — almost certainly — our National Guard. But we’ve finally started doing something about that. I hope. I am comforted by the images of these citizen soldiers protecting our capital and the people who work there.
The Proud Boys and the Oath Keepers and QAnon are willing to kill for Donald Trump and now we’ll see if they are willing to die for him. Don’t expect to see much storming of the barricades with these guys. Pipe bombs give you time to sneak away.
For the time being we still have laws and men and women willing to enforce them. Those responsible for the January 6th riot are being arrested and some of them will go to prison. It took almost ten years to find and kill Osama bin Laden. But we didn’t have 150,000 photos of him.
The Big Lie
NYU journalism professor Jay Rosen with a suggestion for journalists in the post-Trump era:
“In the same way you might begin an interview with a pro forma, “this is on the record,” or “how do you spell your name?” journalists (and talk show bookers) should set the ground rules with, “Very quickly before we start: who was the legitimate winner of the 202 election?”
If the answer is “that’s a complicated question,” or “Trump”… no interview or air time.
I don’t get a lot of invitations these days but the next time someone asks me to go have a beer, should I ask this question: Who won? Do I want to spend time with someone who believes The Big Lie and perpetuates it? A lie that can and might destroy our country?
Under consideration.
“Don’t send me back to Bumfuck, Missouri!”
I grew up in a small town in Southeast Missouri. Like Mayberry during the 1950’s. Not so much these days. But there was never anything cool or exciting to do in our little town. No cool restaurants or bars or museums, just a sleepy little town surrounded by farms. For many of us, it was hard to leave for the bright lights of the big cities. No idea why.
But one of my friends ran for state representative (after a couple of failed business ventures) and won. When he got to Jefferson City (the state capital) he and the other newly elected reps got a little orientation from the leader of their caucus (GOP). Here’s how my friend described this introduction to the legislature (I’m paraphrasing but not off by much).
If you follow the party line and do exactly what the party leaders tell you, we can help you stay up here as long as you want. And help you go on to higher office. But if you don’t follow party leadership, we can make sure you serve one term only. And you’ll be back where you came from selling term life insurance. Your call.
Sad to say my friend didn’t have to think long about this. He got in line and stayed in line.
Now, think about the pols that make it to the Big Time: Washington D.C. Power, money, influence, privilege, fame. A heady mix. After a few years of this good life, they thought of going back to Bumfuck, Missouri is worse than a death sentence. You’ll do anything to get reelected. Anything. Because if you cross the wrong people they can send you back home where you’ll make speeches at the local Rotary luncheon.
This is what I think is haunting those willing to overturn what they know is a legitimate election. Oh, most of them wouldn’t have to go back to Bumfuck. They’d find someplace close to land. But it wouldn’t be the same. Yeah, they’d still have the house in Georgetown or Silver Springs and plenty of spending money. But it wouldn’t be the same. It would just be Rotary in a nicer restaurant.
Belief vs. Reality
“We are all capable of believing things which we know to be untrue, and then, when we are finally proved wrong, impudently twisting the facts so as to show that we were right,” but “sooner or later a false belief bumps up against solid reality, usually on a battlefield.”
— George Orwell
Or the marble halls of Congress. Seems like everybody is worried that millions of Trump supporters believe he really won the election. And that, they insist, undermines the very fabric of our democracy. I don’t doubt that but I’m skeptical there’s anything anyone can do to change what they believe. How much energy should be expended to convince these same people the QAnon conspiracy is horseshit? That there really are no pedophile lizard people. I see no difference. As long as they’re trapped in their social media echo chamber and getting all the news from Fox and OAN, their “beliefs” will continue to be fed and reinforced.
“But they’ll turn to violence, like what we saw on January 6 at the U.S. Capital!” Probably. People will die and a lot of damage will result. But I’m curious how these overweight weekend-warriors in their Wal-Mart camo will do against trained, well-armed National Guard troops. Don’t get me wrong, I hope this doesn’t happen but the Trumpsters insist it will. So be it.
As some of last week’s “patriots” get arrested and — eventually — face trial and jail time, I’ll also be curious to see how they handle that. As well as true patriots like Rev. Martin Luther King and Nelson Mandela? Can they do a few years of federal prison time? We’ll see.
So I really don’t care if you “believe in your heart” the election was stolen. It wasn’t, but believe that lie –and live that lie — till the day you die. And send me a photo of one of the lizard people.
